GUBER ELECTION PETITIONS: Supreme Court to the rescue?

BY DAPO AKINREFON, CHARLES KUMOLU & GBENGA OKE

…As lawyers express mix feelings
IF the major players in this political dispensation could turn back the hands of the time to the pre-2010 Electoral Act era, certainly, many would avoid remembering the length of time petitions spent at election petition tribunals across the country during that period.
The pursuit for redress in many cases took years and in some cases almost the duration of time that they would otherwise have spent in office. It was based on this that in reviewing the Electoral Act in 2010 that the National Assembly gave a time limit for the consideration of election petitions.
The amended Act stipulated that the state Election Petitions Tribunals must dispense cases arising from the

The House of Representatives before now was noted for its prolific output of bills and other legislative proposals. The Aminu Tambuwal House, however, seems not to have found the energy for such. Is it lethargy or what?
Given that its primary responsibility is lawmaking many Nigerians had looked up to the present House of Representatives with its youthful membership to stimulate far reaching legislative proposals for the betterment of the people.
But eight months on and still counting, the present House under the leadership of Speaker Aminu Tambuwal seems not to have caught the fire that so much sparkled under preceding legislative houses.

Ojukwu must not die in vain – Eminent Nigerians

*Tinubu, Fashola, Okorocha, Utomi, Chukwumerije, others seek new Nigerians

BY CLIFFORD NDUJIHE  & CHRIS OCHAYI

WHEREVER his spirit is now, the late Elder statesman and leader of the defunct Biafran Republic, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, would be nodding his head in affirmation and self-satisfaction. Reason: After four decades of vilification for allegedly waging war against his fatherland, most Nigerians now identify with the cause he fought for and want the government to revisit the issues he raised to save the country from implosion.
Indeed, eminent Nigerians drawn from many parts of the country yesterday lamented that the flames of injustice, corruption, insecurity and faulty federation that led to the 30-month civil war of 1967-70 were still flickering and would unleash more damage on the polity if not extinguished through National Dialogue and restructuring of the polity.

By Onochie Anibeze
We’ll serve Nigerians what they want and make them happy,” was the simple way Stephen Keshi  responded to kudos on his style of training  just as he walked out of the field after a hot training session with the home –based Eagles at the FIFA Goal Project site of the National Stadium here in Abuja.
He was worn-out and was sweating even more than some players. He was that involved. Hard work, you would say.
The Eagles play Rwanda in a Nations Cup qualifier in Kigali on Wednesday.
The Eagles have been sweating it out on the artificial turf in Abuja since they will play on a similar pitch in Kigali. They will be joined by 11 Europe-based players this weekend before they fly out Monday night for the assignment.

Eagles in operation rout Rwanda

Coach Stephen Keshi has ordered his Super Eagles troops to  rain down the goals when they confront the Rwandan national team in a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations  preliminary round two qualifier on May 29 at the Stade Regional de Kigali.
With Nigeria’s absence at the 2012 edition of Africa’s biggest soccer competition still fresh in the mind of many, Keshi, who  worked as a television pundit at the tournament jointly hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, told his troops midweek that only w convincing away victory was good enough for wearied Nigerian soccer fans, who he added must be won over with a good performance in the qualifying campaign for the 2013 edition of CAN.
