Ajisomo disclosed this on Friday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the conference, which will hold in Abuja from March 19 to March 23.

Govt didn’t sponsor National summit – Tony Uranta

*We got money without govt’s involvement
*Says a national conference is inevitable

MR Tony Ipriye Uranta is the Executive Secretary of the National Summit Group. In this interview he maintains that a conference is inevitable if the multifarious problems facing the nation must be addressed. He, however, dismissed remarks that the two day national dialogue recently orgnised was sponsored by the Federal government. Excerpts:
What is the essence of the summit and why now?
If you listened carefully to the opening remarks of my co-convener, Prof Pat Utomi, you would know that Nigeria is at a precipice right now. This is whether we like it or not. We have had unrest, both spontaneous and orchestrated since the end of the 2011 elections. Immediately the elections ended, we started having people being killed barbarically enmasse all over the north especially. This was after some people had said that they would make the nation ungovernable. That seemed to have died out but may be the government not too sensitively, proclaimed a deregulation of the downstream sector which I, was one of those that opposed it in the beginning. And these brought about what I had predicted a natural reaction from all Nigerians saying no, you cannot add more weight to our suffering when you have not yet shown us a good will or intention to bring about respite to us.
This blossomed into what became as I saw, a politically motivated opposition and nearly transformed into an unrest that would bring about deaths and calamity. But we thank God Nigerians submitted themselves to the leadership of labour which called off the strike. I supported the strike but I did not support going on the street. We are now in the phase where they are negotiating with government.

Van Persie shatters Liverpool’s Euro dream

Liverpool had failed to score in their previous two Premier League home games but they took a 23rd minute lead when Koscielny sliced Jordan Henderson’s low cross from the right into his own net at the near post.
Suarez was denied by the woodwork before Arsenal conjured up an equaliser out of nothing in the 31st minute after sloppy defending by the hosts.
A fine cross by Bacary Sagna found Van Persie who nodded home from five yards out.
The drama continued as Suarez was denied by another fine Szczesny save after a brilliant solo run by the former Ajax man, while Kuyt hit the woodwork on the stroke of half-time after connecting with Charlie Adam’s cross from the left.
Arsenal’s cause was not helped by the untimely departure of midfielder Arteta on a stretcher in the 53rd minute after running into Jordan Henderson.
Defender Martin Kelly, starting in place of the injured Glen Johnson, missed a glorious chance from inside the six-yard to earn Liverpool victory after Henderson delivered a fine 70th minute cross into the six-yard area.
At the other end, Reina’s outstretched leg prevented Walcott from winning it for Arsenal.
An entertaining match looked set to end in stalemate before Van Persie unleashed a terrific volley from an acute angle following a great ball from Alex Song deep into eight minutes of stoppage time.

Laptop theft did not put space station in peril – NASA

WASHINGTON  (AFP) – A stolen US space agency laptop containing codes that control the International Space Station did not put the orbiting lab in peril, a NASA spokesman said on Friday.
The unencrypted notebook computer went missing in March 2011 and “resulted in the loss of the algorithms used to command and control the International Space Station,” NASA Inspector General Paul Martin told lawmakers this week.
But the US space agency insisted that international astronauts were never at risk aboard the research outpost.
“NASA takes the issue of IT security very seriously, and at no point in time have operations of the International Space Station been in jeopardy due to a data breach,” spokesman Trent Perrotto said.
The theft was alerted to Congress on Wednesday along with 5,408 computer security “incidents” that resulted in unauthorized access to NASA systems or installation of malicious software in the past two years, Martin said.

Liberian refugees in Nigeria get deadline to return home

LAGOS  (AFP) – The UN refugee agency Friday gave Liberian refugees in Nigeria until mid-year to either voluntarily return home or be declared migrants.
About 5,000 Liberian refugees, some of whom have been in Nigeria since the 1990s after they fled the civil war in their country, currently live in Nigeria, Gogo Hukportie of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) told AFP.
“If you wish to return to Liberia, you can repatriate soon after registering for voluntary repatriation. On July 1, 2012, you won’t be refugees anymore,” she told a meeting of about 70 Liberian refugees in Lagos.
“You will lose the legal status which protected you during your years of exile,” she said.
Some Liberians are reluctant to return home.
“We ran away from home because of insecurity. There are still peacekeeping forces in Liberia. This means peace has not returned to our country. Do you now want to push us out to Liberia?” said Jonas Gaye Kraty.
One of Africa’s bloodiest conflicts, Liberia’s war claimed over 200,000 lives and sent a million people into refugee camps in nearby countries.

Boko Haram: JAMB may cancel UTME exams in Borno, others

AbujaThe Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Dibu Ojerinde, has said there will be no Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in the volatile states in northern Nigeria.
Ojerinde made the announcement on Friday in Abuja while speaking with reporters at the 58th National Council on Education (NEC) meeting.
According to him, JAMB will be forced to cancel the examination if the Boko Haram attack on primary and secondary schools in Borno State continues.

3SC coach flays NFA’s prohibition of certain foreign-based players

IbadanCoach Festus Allen of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan has criticised the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) for asking the Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, from fielding some foreign-based players.
Allen was reacting to NFA’s recent directive to Keshi, asking him to stop using Yakubu Ayegbeni, Osaze Odemwingie and Dickson Etuhu.
Allen told newsmen on Friday in Ibadan that the NFA’s action was tantamount to interference and undue infringement in the affairs of the technical crew of the Super Eagles.
“Keshi should be left alone by the NFA to decide the players to field for any match.
“The NFA should face its administrative job of ensuring the development of football in the country and leave Keshi and the team alone,’’ he said.

Onyeka speaks at 60

The elegant stallion, Onyeka Onwenu, during the week turned 60. But the red carpet was not rolled out. In this interview with Showtime Celebrity, the Imo State born daughter of the late politician D.K. Onwenu opens up on  why people think she is controversial and more.
Enjoy.
Congratulations on your 60th birthday!
Thank you.
I thought stallion is used to describe a male horse. How come you subscribe to being called a stallion?
First of all, I didn’t give myself the name, hence it would have been something else if I objected to it.
It’s not my name. But for some reasons, it was the press that gave me the name.
But you seem to be at home with it.
What am I going to do? And who am I going to fight (laughs). It doesn’t bother me and I take it as a compliment because a stallion is strong and walks majestically which describes the way I walk with my head up, walking into a room and you can’t ignore me. It’s a God given gift and you don’t apologise for things like that.
At 60, do you feel fulfilled?
I’m on my way to being fulfilled. The day you think you’ve gotten there, then, it’s time for you to go home. Life is an on-going experience, a University. So, I look forward to each year for what I can learn and do better than what I’ve done in the past.
There’s still so much to be done and I’m involved in so much. My children need my motherly care. So also my community and my Church. I get up in the morning and feel like I can still contribute so much to my society.
Do you have any regrets in life?
Definitely, I have plenty of them and I think we all do if we must be honest to ourselves. Of course, you have

Fire razes Barewa College

Zaria – An early morning inferno on Friday burnt down 15 classrooms, a staff room and a resource centre at the 91-year-old Barewa College in Zaria, Kaduna State.

He said it had taken the intervention of good Samaritans to put off out the fire.
When contacted on phone, the Principal of the College, Malam Mohammed Abbass-Aliyu, who confirmed the incident, said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
He, however, said that a committee had been set up to determine the cause, saying that the committee was to be headed by Malam Tanimu Tanko, the Vice Principal, Academics of the college.
The principal appealed to both staff and students of the college to remain calm as necessary actions were being put in place to ensure normalcy in the college.

Tajikistan blocks Facebook and several news sites

DUSHANBE (AFP) – The Tajikistan government ordered Internet providers on Saturday to block Facebook, along with several independent media sites, a spokeswoman for the country’s web-provider association told AFP.
“Internet providers received a spoken order from government agents to block the sites,” said Parvina Ibodova, president of the association.
“We are minions. We get our licences from the authorities and that’s why, as though we were circuit breakers, we are obedient and cut access to the sites.”
Ibodova said about a dozen Internet providers had since Saturday blocked access to Facebook and several independent sites including tjknews.com and centrasia.ru.
The government’s communication agency declined to comment.
Tadjikistan is a former Soviet republic in Central Asia that borders Afghanistan. The poorest of the former Soviet nations, it has been ruled with an iron fist by Emomali Rakhmon since 1992.
Ibodova said she did not know if the decision to block the sites was political, adding she had been told it was for technical and security reasons.
The blocked sites regularly publish articles critical of Rakhmon’s regime.

Jonathan will occupy Aso Rock for 8 years – Asari Dokubo

Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari is the former President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF). He is better known for his struggles for the libration of the Niger Delta region. To some people, he is freedom fighter while to others, he is a controversial personality. In this encounter with JOHN BULUS, he said amongst other things that President Goodluck Jonathan has 8 years to occupy Aso Rock Villa as President of Nigeria

The recent national strike that erupted on the heels of the removal of oil subsidy saw you as part of those who pinched tent with the federal Government and President Goodluck Jonathan. You also threatened to occupy the oil platforms in the Niger Delta should the oil companies join the strike and further warned that the Ijaw people will not take it lightly should any “harm” come to Mr. President. What was that all about?
The first correction I want to make is on the issue of national protest. What is the definition of national? There was no such protest. There were protests by hirelings of those who are the real owners of Nigeria which we have revealed, who are making money from the sweat and blood of the people of Niger Delta and the Igbos.
And if you watched, the whole of South- South, apart from some flash points in Benin in Edo, the whole of South East and majority of North Central were quiet. So it was a conspiracy amongst the Lagos people and the people of the North to have a regime change because they are losing power.
Asari Dokubo

They are losing economic and political power and they are afraid that if President Jonathan is allowed to

Edo 2012: Oshiomhole will win resoundingly at first ballot -Tom Ikimi

With the emergence of General Charles Archiabvare as the gubernatorial aspirant of the PDP in July’s governorship election in Edo state, the stage appear set for the political brinkmanship and battle towards undoing Governor Adams Oshiomole and the Action Congress in the state, to commence.
In this interview with a Chieftain of Action Congress in Edo State , Chief Tom Ikimi, he speaks of the challenges posed by the PDP, the chances of the Comrade Governor and the role Edo indigenes will play in deciding the winner.
The emergence of Gen. Charles Archiabvare as the PDP gubernatorial candidate in Edo State is no longer news. Is ACN and Governor Oshiomole not worried because the man is said to be loaded and there are fears he may influence the voters going by the level of poverty in the land and all that?
CHIEF Tom Ikimi, former Foreign Affairs Minister during late General Sani Abacha's regime

Well I understand that the PDP has concluded its convention in Benin City where they have selected one of their aspirants to be a candidate to run in the up coming election in July for the governorship.
Our candidate has not yet been officially chosen but I have every confidence and good hope that Comrade Adams Oshiomole will emerge when the party eventually does its primary. We of the ACN in Edo State have not bothered whoever PDP or any party may bring to contest this election.
As it stands now, Comrade Oshiomole is virtually the house-hold name in Edo State . His support and supporter’s run across party lines and majority of the people who support him don’t even belong to any party.
However, we want a free and fair election which would be conducted on the basis of one man, one vote which would be democratically conducted without any coercion or whatsoever, without any Police coercion or military coercion. Whatever PDP can put forward, it is very clear that Adams Oshiomole will win resoundingly in the first ballot in the coming election.

People have said Governor Oshiomole has worked magic since assumption of office but some are saying others factors may play a role in deciding this matter, including money. Do you believe money politics that would play a huge impact?
It is rather unfortunate that money politics is reigning now in Nigeria . But you can take a horse to the river; you cannot force him to drink. The PDP may pump in as much money as they want but the people will overcome at the end, because they know what they suffered in the previous years of PDP rule.

We have heard of several types of rigging, with all manner of description. Some say it is scientific, some say it is digital and others say it is all about the more you look the less you see. Some people also fear the role of the PDP at the center. How is the ACN in Edo State , planning to counter this?
This election would be between our candidate who is likely to be Comrade Adams Oshiomole and any other candidate. It would not be an election between Comrade Adam Oshiomole against any money bag or against Chief Anenih, the President or anybody. So let the people choose a governor from the candidates that are contesting the election. We have no problem whatsoever, we understand that the only way that PDP under the leadership of Edo State want to pursue the election is on the basis of rigging but our eyes are wide open.

The Jos blast: Church member mistaken for suicide bomber, lynched

Call it cruel fate or destiny, but it has left an ugly scar in the minds of many and probably a wound that will take time to heal for those close to him. Such is the story of Joseph James Ashaba, father of two children,  until his death last Sunday was a staff of Enterprise Bank in Jos. He was mistaken as one of the suicide bombers that struck at the COCIN Headquarters Compound Church last Sunday and lynched.
The story had it that one of the two suicide bombers in the black Volkswagen car that crashed into the church jumped out before the explosion and was lynched before he could escape. However, facts emerging are that he might have been either hit by the car as it sped towards the church building or jumped out of the way to avoid being hit when he saw the car racing towards him.
The confusion and the angry reaction that followed in what became a mob action did not give him much chance. Even attempts by some church leaders and prominent people to save him for the purpose of interrogation if he was indeed one of the attackers did not work.

Livestock business: Grasscutter more economical, lucrative – Onebune

Prince Arinze Onebune, the CEO and Managing Consultant of Jovana Farms is undoubtedly one Nigerian who is passionate about job creation in the country. He has spent over 16 years in grasscutter farming and has gone ahead to preach the gospel to job-seeking graduates.
He insists that unlike other forms of animal husbandry, it costs next to nothing to start the business even right from one’s backyard. “The good news is that grasscutter meat is now being recommended in place of beef because of its health benefits”. For this reason he wants the government to appreciate his efforts. He took time to speak on this recently with Saturday Vanguard Business. Excerpts

You keep insisting that grasscutter farming is one easy means of creating job in the country. Why is this so?
Thank you for this question. When people in government talk about poverty alleviation their mindset is that of providing Okada, motorcycles, Wheelbarrow and tricycles for the job-seeking youths.
People can become self-employed and self-reliant through agriculture.

Bonga Oil Spill: Our stories, our woes – Communities

“We are crying out to the federal government and the international community to come to our aid, and perhaps, to be aware of the great injustice that  the Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company has done to our lands. They refused to employ our children when they invaded our lands and today, their oil is constituting a major threat to our existence. We are not happy and that’s why we are crying for help.”
These were the heavy words of the traditional ruler of Bilabiri community, one of the communities affected by the Bonga oil spill that occurred  last December, in Bayelsa State, His Royal Highness, Jacob Ajuju.
The royal father led a 12-man delegation to Lagos, recently as part of the move to attract global sympathy and also, to register their grievances over Shell’s inability to clean up the oil spill few months after its occurrence  in the coastal communities of Bayelsa State.
The spillage, which is  adjudged to be one of the worst in 10 years, is said to have culminated into gross environmental pollution, destruction of sea lives and diminishing quality of soil texture of the affected communities.

Alleged ritual killing: Fear grips Bayelsa University town

Fear has gripped residents of the university town of Amassoma in the Southern Ijaw council area of Bayelsa State following the rise in ritual related killings.
Just as residents of the serene riverine community are yet to overcome the gruesome killing of the driver to the Registrar of the Niger Delta University, Mr. Stanley Boukiri there had also been  series of violent attacks and abduction in the last few weeks with the spontaneous stabbing of some students and the recent abduction and release of a corps member by the suspected ritual killers.
The activities of the suspected ritual killers Saturday Vanguard learnt came into the open with the killing of the 31years old driver of the institution’s registrar, Stanley Boukiri on February 6, 2012.
The decomposed corpse of the deceased was later discovered ina bush at a sand dump site in the outskirts of the town.

Imo/Delta polls: S-Court affirms Uduaghan, Okorocha victories

Respite came the way of Governors Emmanuel Uduaghan and Rochas Okorocha of Delta and Imo states respectively Friday, as the Supreme Court dismissed two separate appeals that sought their removal from office.
The  appeal against Okorocha was lodged by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and its governorship candidate in Imo state, Mr Ikedi Ohakim, while the governorship candidate of the Democratic Peoples party, DPP, in the April 26 gubernatorial election in Delta State filed the appeal against Uduaghan, Chief Great Ogboru.
In a unanimous judgment yesterday, the five-man panel of justices of the apex court okayed the certificates of return  issued to the governors by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, just as it upheld the affirmation of their victory by election petition tribunals that sat in the two states.

Roadblocks: 8 policemen arrested for flouting IG’s order.

Umuahia - Eight policemen have been arrested for flouting the order of  the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on roadblocks, the State Commissioner of Police,  Mr Bala Hassan, has said.
Hassan, who made this known to  newsmen on Friday in Umuahia, said the command  had taken seriously the IG’s order.
The IG Mohammed Abubakar had directed all the police formations  to dismantle all roadblocks forthwith and adhere to the new rules on patrol.
Hassan said that the officers were arrested “because they were seen patrolling the areas they were not assigned”.
He said that the command had  since inaugurated a taskforce to  enforce compliance with IG’s  orders.
The Commissioner explained that the orders of the IG did not affect route patrol.
“We are allowed to stay on the highway for purposes of providing security to commuters, but no roadblocks.”
He said that the police was only given the leverage to check vehicle licenses at borders communities or towns and not inside the towns.
The Commissioner added that the police would only inspect vehicle licenses on occasions where it received reports on vehicle theft.
Hassan said that the abolition of  roadblocks had not increased the level of crime in Abia as  the police intensified regular patrol of volatile areas such as  Umuahia.
“Members of the public should see the police as friends and not foes. We want policemen to be doing the right thing and we cannot detain suspects against the provisions of the law.” (NAN)

US slaps sanctions on Taliban ‘top bomb-maker’

WASHINGTON  (AFP) – The US Treasury on Friday slapped sanctions on a man they said was a top bomb-maker of the Taliban, aiming to further cut off his and the Afghan insurgency’s access to financial support.
The Treasury said Abdul Samad Achekzai has a central role in Taliban operations building improvised explosive devices in western and southern Afghanistan.
Samad was responsible for getting the materials for the IEDs, building them, and training others to do so, it said.
The roadside bombs have contributed to a large proportion of the death of coalition troops battling the insurgency in the country.
Samad has also deployed a number of suicide bomb attacks against Coalition Forces and Afghan authorities as well.
“This is the first sanctions action specifically targeting the Taliban’s IED manufacturer and support network,” the Treasury said in a statement.
“As a key official in the Taliban’s IED supply network, Abdul Samad Achekzai is responsible for untold death and suffering.”
The sanctions order the freezing of any of Samad’s assets held by US entities, and bans US entities and citizens from any transactions with him.

Nnewi (Anambra)The former President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr Dozie Ikedife, has described the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu as one of the greatest Africans that ever lived.
Ikedife made the observation in an interview on Friday at Nnewi, Anambra, shortly after the late Ikemba Nnewi was buried at his country home.
Accoding to him, in the history of Nigeria and Africa, no funeral has been like that of Ojukwu.
“He was celebrated in America, Europe, Asia and Africa. If Nigerians can learn from what he stood for – equity, fairness and justice – the country will be better for it,” Ikedife said.
Also speaking, a politician and economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, said that the gathering of Nigerians at the funeral of Ojukwu, who was  also Ezeigbo Gburugburu, was momentous.

“Only residents with proof of residence can perform Hajj from Lagos”

IkejaThe Lagos State Government has said that only Lagosians with proof of residence will be allowed to perform this year’s Hajj from the state. And in Jigawa the 2011 Hajj Committee has returned N17 million to the coffers of the state government.
Mr Oyinlomo Danmole, the state’s Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, who is also the Amir-ul-Hajj, said this at a news conference on Friday, in Ikeja.
He explained that the measure was to create more space for intending pilgrims from the state, noting that the Hajj allocations to the state by the National Hajj Commission were decreasing.
“The National Hajj Commission has allocated to us only 3,852 Hajj slots for this year; this is grossly inadequate as the demand for Hajj pilgrimage in the state is far more than the supply.

Ojukwu raised for specific assignment in Nigeria – Jonathan

OJUKWU

Nnewi (Anambra) – President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday described the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu as a leader raised by God for a specific assignment in Nigeria.
Speaking at a requiem mass in honour of the ex-Biafra leader in Nnewi, Anambra, Jonathan said Ojukwu was not raised for the Igbo alone but for the entire country.
He said no Nigerian leader had been accorded the respect by Nigerians as Ojukwu had received since he passed on.
The president said that the popularity of Ojukwu could be seen from the way his body had been taken round the south eastern states.
He said such show of acceptance was rare in Africa where the bodies of former leaders were not allowed into their country when they died in exile.

Onigbinde, Disu differ on Eagles performance

Adegboye Onigbinde

FIFA and CAF Technical Committee member, Adegboye Onigbinde, said on Thursday that the Super Eagles failed to beat Rwanda in Kigali on Wednesday because a poor blend of the home and Europe-based players created some weakness. The Eagles were forced to a goalless draw by the lesser-rated Amavubi Stars in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier despite parading a star-studded side. But Onigbinde, a former Eagles coach, said the constitution of the Nigeria side could have been their undoing.
“The best thing any coach can do to the Eagles is to make the home-based players the core of the team. The coach started well by selecting 11 players from the Nigeria Premier League for the match but he could have put more trust in them as he did in the friendly games with Angola and Liberia. We need to make the home-based players the basis of the Eagles development,” Onigbinde said.

Some menbers of Super Eagles after the game

The result means the Super Eagles will have the Herculean task of deciding their fate in one game by beating the Amavubi Stars when both sides meet in the return leg fixture in June in Nigeria. The winner of the encounter will then meet one of the teams at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations to advance to the next stage.
Enegwa admits it would have been worse for Nigeria had Rwanda won the Kigali encounter.
