The University of Lagos, Akoka, has renewed its commitment towards providing quality education for the over 40 visually impaired students in the institution with the proposed procurement of 30 special computers.
With 15 already on ground, the devices, according to the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Babajide Alo, are loaded with special software packages with transcription facilities so as to further enhance the use of audio devices and Braille papers by visually impaired students.
Alo made this known while receiving the President, Soroptimist International of Great Britain, Mrs. Pat Black, who was on an inspection visit to the university’s Braille Centre built in 2010 by the Soroptimist International of Eko.
The Braille Centre uses the latest computerized software to assist visually challenged students with their studies and research, thus trying to bridge the gap between them and their sighted counterparts.
Buttressing the institution’s commitment to the holistic education of challenged students, acting University Librarian, Okanlawon Oladipo Adedeji, revealed that the university had various preferences for challenged students and was also planning other state-of-the-art services.
“These are students we cannot allow to be on their own, so, as we cater for other students, we have put in place services for them. We care for all categories of students, but for those with physical challenges, we give priority, including in the area of accommodation.
For visually impaired students, we had in place audio devices to aid their studies, but since the establishment of the Braille Centre two years ago by the Soroptimist of Eko, they now have the opportunity of studying and writing examinations without audio devices, but with Braille papers. The production of Braille is actually now done here in the centre.”
