Nigeria's Commonwealth wrestling champion vows to defend title

Nigeria’s gold medalist in the Greco Roman style of wrestling at the last Commowealth Games in India Joe Agbonevbare of Edo state has vowed to retain the title in the Glasgow Games next year.

Agbonevbare who was beaten at the maiden Chief EK Clark Wrestling Classic in Warri early this year sounded very tough yesterday that there’s no stopping him from defending his title.

Delta state’s Lucky Opiated in blue outfit lucks hornets with Adibo Dick of
Bayelsa state in the men’s 84kg weight class free style at the just concluded Maiden
Chief E K Clerk wrestling championship in Warri, Delta state. Adibo Dick won the bout.

He spoke to Sports Vanguard yesterday for the first time after his ill-fated outing in the EK Clark championship in Warri. “Up till this time, I still cannot fathom what happened to me at that championship in Warri. Let me say that I moved up to a higher weight class (96kg) from my normal weight class which is 84kg .

“Also I was not really prepared for that championship and wouldn’t have competed in it, but because of the clause by the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) that whoever did not wrestle in that championship would not have the opportunity to be considered in the last Commonwealth Wrestling Champion-ship in South Africa early this month.

But all that is gone and this is a new tournament which qualifies us for a palace in the Commonwealth Games in Scotland and I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t qualify for a place to defend my title in Scotland”, Agbonevbare said.
