A new survey by NOIPolls Limited, a country-specific polling organisation in West Africa, has revealed that typhoid, malaria and pregnancy-related treatments top the list of medical services offered by fake or quack doctors in Nigeria.

According to the findings in the “Sub-standard or Quack Medical Practitioners in Nigeria Snap Poll”, conducted in the second week of this month, more than 50 per cent of the population have been treated by quacks for typhoid and malaria fever while they also offer about 11 per cent of maternal and child care services in the country.

The poll also revealed that about 2 in 10 Nigerians have directly or indirectly been victims of quacks in medical profession when they needed medical treatment.

Respondents to the poll were of the opinion that the health condition of patients became worse after receiving such treatment.

The survey was conducted to gauge Nigerians knowledge on the existence of quack medical practitioners and its effects on the country’s health sector.

Other findings from the poll showed that more than 79 per cent of Nigerians are aware of the growing prevalence of fake doctors.

The report stated, “The experiences of most victims of quack doctors end up in bitter tales. It is imperative to note that these quack medical practitioners, criminal as they may seem, tend to be filling a critical vacuum necessitated by inefficiencies of the country’s health sector,

“Finally, the increasing prevalence of quack medical practitioners and cases of their victims are issues of grave concern, requiring urgent attention from all relevant stakeholders.”
