Breast Cancer Increasing Among Nigerian Women – Durosinmi-Etti

Breast Cancer
The President, Cancer Education and Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, Prof. Durosinmi-Etti, has raised the alarm that more Nigerian women are being diagnosed with breast cancer in recent times.

He stated this at the inauguration of the CEAFON Cancer Summit in Abuja.

The Federal Ministry of Health is collaborating with the foundation in the summit.

He identified late and poor diagnosis as well as lack of cancer treatment centres as factors increasing cancer deaths in the country.

Durosinmi-Etti said, “Lack of medical personnel and oncologists as well as treatment centres are other factors. Where these treatment centres are available, we have problems getting them to function. Cancer concerns us all. There is much to be done and we are making this effort to stop the scourge.”

The CEAFN boss, who is also the Chairman, Consultative Committee on Cancer Control in Nigeria, said the conference, under the theme, ‘Stop Breast Cancer from Taking Her Life’, would assess major challenges of diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer in the country.

He said, “Over the years, there has been an increase in the number of breast cancer patients, and it is for this reason that about 500 stakeholders are to participate in the summit. We are to discuss and seek ways of creating awareness on the disease. It is also expected that the summit will evolve and propose to the government a national policy guideline on the treatment of breast cancer.”
