Foundation Offers Oral Rehydration Salt To Check Diarrhoea

To reduce incidence of diarrhoea among children, the Better Care Foundation Ltd is set to distribute Oral Rehydration Salt to health centres in the country.

The BCF President, Mr. Rally Rapuluchukwu, stated this while marking the second phase of the organisation’s National Diarrhoea and Malnutrition Prevention/Right Treatment Programme.

In a statement obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday, Rapuluchukwu also listed the clinical benefits of ORS, especially in recurring cases of diarrhoea among children under the age of five.

He also frowned on the sale of non-NAFDAC certified, asymmetrical milligrammes of zinc to mothers by some patent stores.

The foundation, he added, would educate patent medicine operators on the need to adhere to the World Health Organisation guidelines for the treatment of diarrhoea.

According to him, the foundation will be subsidising the cost of ORS for mothers, especially those in rural areas to the tune of N41m.

Regretting the carelessness of many mothers in handling diarrhoea cases, he advised them not to resort to bringing their children to hospitals only when the situation is out of control.

He also called on all federal and state-owned hospitals, clinics and health centres as well as other stakeholders interested in the free ZINC supply programme to forward their contact details to [email protected]
