Information Technology experts have called on the Federal Government to adopt technology in addressing the current security challenges, which, they said, “have bedevilled the country.”

The experts stated this in Lagos, at a national security conference organised by Afrisec Distribution and Consulting Plc in collaboration with Bosch Security Systems.

They maintained that the call was in the interest of protecting lives and property, considering the high rate of crimes perpetrated in the country, especially kidnapping and terrorism.

The Regional Director, Eastern Europe and Africa, Bosch, Mr. Andries Nouwens, said the usage of technology was the best approach to various security challenges in Nigeria now.

He said that Bosch’s decision to help the Nigerian government address its security problems informed the collaboration with Afrisec in bringing latest technology solutions in city surveillance to Nigeria.

According to him, terrorism has become a threat in many countries and security system has a lot of equipment that could detect some suspicious behaviours.

Nouwens said Bosch was trying to replicate its achievement in about 150 countries across the globe and was already protecting 21 airports, 75 railway projects and more than 100 hotels worldwide with products tailored to meet local requirements of each market.

He said, “For example, if somebody is leaving a bag with maybe a bomb in it, we have cameras that can see the person that is leaving the luggage behind. The camera automatically gives an alarm to tell the control room to check out the bag before something happens.

“We have cameras with Intelligence Video Analytic which analyse pictures and give alarm. Whenever you install surveillance cameras in cities, the crime rate goes down drastically, you scare away criminals.”

The Managing Director of Afrisec, Mr. Edward Van Trotsenburg, said the company was in partnership with Bosch in order to protect people and their assets.

Trotsenburg said the security technology products from Bosch was to foster active responses by security agencies in curbing crimes.

He said, “So, instead of waiting for three to four days before knowing that a crime had been committed, you are able to know immediately that a crime is about to happen and you respond by stopping it. If we are able to respond swiftly before a crime is committed, all parts of Nigeria will be safer.”

A consultant with Vince Network Limited, Mr. Vincent Onyekwelu, said the focus of the conference was to evaluate security solutions from Bosch being showcased by Afrisec to help Nigeria with issues of national security.
